This leading edge, internationally accredited Fire Service seeks a dynamic, forward thinking professional with a passion for Public Service from a fire safety perspective.
As a Fire Protection Engineer, you will provide expert fire protection and technical advice to the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chiefs, specific areas within Fire Rescue, City departments, other professional engineers, builders, and general public based on your engineering experience and judgment. You will represent the Branch as a Fire Industry expert in various Municipal, Provincial and National working groups and committees, and carryout special projects as assigned.
Reporting to one of the Deputy Fire Chiefs, you will:
- Interact with the Planning and Development Branch on construction, renovation, and maintenance of existing or new structures and subdivision design
- Review engineering components and proposals to ensure that Fire Rescue's requirements from a public safety perspective are met
- Interpret Fire Codes, recommend ways of minimizing fire safety concerns, research special conditions, and develop reports
- Develop and evaluate alternate processes and guidelines that are safe and practicable by using strong engineering principles when a Fire Code cannot be completely met
- Review proposed updates to building and fire codes, regulations, standards and bylaws and prepare comments that support or oppose these updates after evaluating their effects on fire safety and protection
- Provide technical expertise and information to other Fire Services areas on equipment, materials, procedures, and regulatory requirements through research and analysis that support the decision making process
- Liaise with Fire Investigations area to provide technical support
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Fire Chief

Qualifications:
- Completion of a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from a recognized university
- A minimum of seven (7) years progressively responsible experience in code work, fire testing, or fire protection design.
- Must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with APEGGA or with the engineering association of another province of Canada
- Strong knowledge of hazardous processes and materials; government regulations and Acts.
- Knowledge of the design, installation and maintenance of fire alarms, communications systems, sprinklers and other suppression systems, fire codes, fire dynamics, hydraulics, heat transfer, and legal aspect of fire protection.
- Ability to research, analyze, and summarize highly technical data.
- Must possess the skills to develop and maintain business relationship in a multi-departmental environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to make public presentations.
- Possess strong skills to mediate and negotiate for results
- Have a valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's License or operators licensing equivalent recognized by the Operator Licensing and Vehicle Control Regulation, Alta. Reg. 320/2002
- An original Police Information Check or Certified Criminal Record Check issued within the past 6 months that is satisfactory to the employer will be required before starting in the position. The new hire will be required to obtain this check from Edmonton Police Services or a local RCMP detachment. Please note, this may take up to 3 weeks to process
Hours of Work: Hours of work may be subject to the terms and conditions of a variable hours of work program.
Salary Range: 91M; Salary Grade: PE 3; $77,216.700 - $110.310.400 (Annually). Candidates who do not meet the experience requirement may be considered at the developmental level.
