APEGBC Seminar: Hot New Topics in Fire Protection
This seminar briefly reviews some of the changes in the relevant for fire suppression Standards from the current Building Code referenced Standards to the latest Standards issued by NFPA. The topics in the presentation will include:
- Pressure reducing requirements for standpipe systems
- Standpipe zoning and related fire department connection requirements
- Comparison with sprinkler (NFPA 13) zoning requirements
- High storage sprinkler design options:
- Standard LO sprinkler at roof with or without in rack sprinklers
- ESFR sprinklers
- NEW: Specific Application Control Mode Sprinkler
An overview of the options, advantages, limitations and problems of each. A detailed design summary procedure with a step by step methodology will be presented for designing a Control Mode sprinkler system.
- Seismic requirements - new NFPA requirements, comparison with British Columbia Building Code and Vancouver Building By-law requirements
- Other important changes

Murray Johnson has been involved in Fire Protection Engineering and Code Consulting for the past 30 years and has been a Certified Professional since 1990. Murray developed and taught the Fire Suppression course throughout the duration of the M.Eng. programme in Fire Protection Engineering offered at U.B.C.
